What Happened on Wednesday?
This is Holy Week, or what some refer to as Passover Week. It is the time between Palm Sunday, when the crowds welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem, and Resurrection Sunday when Christ rose from the dead. The days between those two Sundays were filled with many noteworthy events.
On Monday, Jesus cleared the money
changers and various markets from the Temple.
More important than the cleansing was His declaration that “My House
will be called a House of Prayer” (Matthew 21: 13 NIV84).
Tuesday was the day that He had a
final confrontation with the Pharisees and Religious Leaders. He knew what they were planning, and He took
one last opportunity to show them the error of their ways. As educated men, they should have recognized
the Messiah when He stood before them, but they were too consumed with their
own power and prestige to see Jesus as the Christ. Jesus took them to task for that, calling
them “hypocrites”, “blind guides”, and “snakes” (Matthew 23: 1 – 36).
Then, came Wednesday. The Scriptures are silent as to what took
place that day. Some speculate that it
was Wednesday when Judas approached the Religious Leaders with his plot to betray
Jesus, but we can’t be sure of the day. One
thing that we don’t know is, what was Jesus doing on Wednesday.
The
Scripture doesn’t tell us, but there are a couple of possibilities. He may have spent some quality time with the
twelve disciples, preparing them for the Mission that lay ahead. However, considering the extended teaching at
the Passover Meal, as described by John (John 13: 1 – 16: 33), there may not
have been any need for teaching on Wednesday. I think it is more likely, considering
what He was facing, that He spent that day in communion with His Father. He knew what was coming. He knew the physical pain that He was
facing. He also knew the separation that
would come when He bore the sins of all mankind. Perhaps He needed the reassurance,
encouragement, and compassion of His Father, to prepare Him for what lay
ahead.
I
don’t know what took place on Wednesday, but I do know that Jesus often took
time to be alone with His Father (Matthew 14: 23, Luke 9:18, & John 6: 15). Although He is the Son of God, He was also
human, and He needed that quiet time to re-energize and prepare for what lay
ahead. He did not neglect spending time
with Almighty God.
Perhaps,
we should follow His lead. We face
trials of various kinds and degrees every day.
Spending time with our Father just might be what we need to get through
to the other side, just as Jesus did.
Don’t neglect your quiet time. I’m
confident that Jesus didn’t.
Matthew 14: 23
