Talking to the Most Powerful and Famous of All!
Have
you ever met or talked to someone powerful or famous? The closest that I ever
got to having a conversation with a celebrity was many years ago on my
birthday. At that time, the Christian
speaker and writer, Liz Curtis Higgs, still worked at WHAS radio station as a
disc jockey. She often called people to wish
them a “happy birthday” on the air. One
year, my staff conspired behind my back to convince her that I should be the “one”. Imagine my surprise when my Secretary told me
that Liz Curtis Higgs was on the phone.
It was an interesting conversation and brought a lot of smiles, but it
was not the norm.
It’s
not easy to contact someone famous for a variety of reasons. You can’t just show up at the White House and
say that you want to speak to the President.
You can’t call up your favorite celebrity and invite them to
dinner. Surprisingly, in some cultures,
even attempting to contact someone powerful could lead to imprisonment or even
death.
Queen
Esther of Persia was faced with just that kind of dilemma. She needed to speak to the King so that she
could reveal a plot to destroy the Jewish people. However, the King had a strict rule that if
anyone approached the King without being summoned, they would be put to death
unless the King held out his golden scepter (Esther 4: 11). Even though Esther was the Queen, this law
still applied. Fortunately, the King extended
his scepter to her, and all was well (Esther 5:2).
In
contrast, just consider how easy it is to communicate with the Creator of the Universe. We can do so without any fear of rejection or
punishment. He is the King of Kings and
Lord of Lords, but His ear is always listening for us. He told the Israelites, “Then, you will
call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me
with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29: 12, 13 NIV84). We don’t have to go
through an intermediary or wait for Him to extend an invitation. He also recognizes our need for Him in times
of trouble, saying, “And call on upon me in the day of trouble; I will
deliver you, and you will honor me” (Psalm 50: 15 NIV84). Just call on Him and He will answer!
Jeremiah 29: 11 - 14
Psalm 50: 1 – 3, 15
P.S.
God does put some requirements on how we call on Him. I’ll talk about those in my next blog. For now, just be thankful that He listens
when we call.
