Life Isn't Fair but God Is!
One statement that we can
probably all agree on is, “Life isn’t fair!” Good people get sick, while evil
people seem to have an easy life. Drunk
drivers kill people but walk away with hardly a scratch. Some people work hard
day after day but never seem to get ahead, while others seem to have everything
handed to them on a silver platter. The
reality is that life is not fair.
Was it
fair that Rebekah favored Jacob over Esau?
No, and where did that favoritism get Jacob—fleeing for his life,
fearful of what his brother might do to him.
Was it fair that Jacob favored his son, Joseph, over his other
sons? No, and where did that favoritism
get Joseph—sleeping in an Egyptian prison?
Favoritism creates chaos.
When sin
entered the world, chaos came right along with it. Our sinful nature led us to favor one child
over another or to value one human being more than another. The result is a topsy, turvy world that is
often unfair—both in rewards and punishments.
The good
news is that fairness still reigns supreme because we serve a God who does not
show favoritism. When the apostle,
Peter, realized that God was welcoming Gentiles into His family, Peter said, “I
now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men
from every nation who fear him and do what is right” (Acts 10: 34, 35 NIV84). Throughout
the New Testament, God makes it clear that He does not show favoritism. He sees each of us as individuals, equal in
His sight. That means that the rewards
and punishment are also fair and equal.
We get what we deserve.
The better
news is that through Christ, God has granted us favor. Without the blood of Christ covering our
sins, we would get exactly what we deserve—eternal punishment. With Christ, we are forgiven! Even in forgiveness, God does not show
favoritism. He grants forgiveness to
everyone who accepts His Son as their Savior.
No exceptions!
People clamor
for fairness and equal treatment constantly.
Lawsuits are filed when people believe that they have been treated
unfairly. Aren’t you glad that we serve
a God who treats everyone equally?
Everyone gets eternal punishment or eternal life—the acceptance of the gift
of Christ is the deciding factor! Do you want what you deserve or the unmerited
favor that God has offered you? The
choice is yours!
