The Helmet and Sword
“Take the helmet of salvation…” (Ephesians 6: 17a NIV84)
Many
religions leave the question of salvation to the fickle hand of their god. They have no assurance of their salvation and
are left to depend upon the mood of their god on any given day. As Christians, we have the assurance of our
salvation when we are washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. The apostle John said, “I write these
things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you might know
that you have eternal life” (I John 5: 13 NIV84). Don’t take your salvation
for granted. It is a gift from God, and
we are blessed to be able to rest in His assurance of eternal life.
“…and
the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6: 17b NIV84)
The Word
of God is both our defensive and offensive weapon. It is a crucial part of our spiritual
armor. Christ set the example when He
countered Satan’s temptation with these words, “It is written: ‘Man does not
live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”
(Matthew 4: 4 NIV84). The Word of
God is our guide. It is trustworthy and
gives us the direction that we need. It
is our source of strength, a constant reminder of God’s unfailing love. Don’t attempt to go into battle without
it. Cherish His Word and feed from it
daily.
Life in
the 21st century is difficult.
We may have more technological advancements than all other generations
combined, but at what cost? Materialism,
loss of family values, lack of integrity, and violent crime are constant
reminders of how far we have strayed from the plan that God laid out for
us. Even as Christians, we are torn
between this world and its’ desires and the Christian walk. All of this leads to doubts, questions,
fears, and the complete absence of peace in our lives. Satan has us right where he wants us. It is only when we put on the full armor of
God, that we can find rest in His promises, and security in our heavenly
future. Then, we are ready to begin the
journey with Him, fully surrendered and completely confident in His ability to
bring us to the day of victory!
Next time,
we will consider the main focus of our journey:
Prayer. It’s not as difficult or
overwhelming as you might think. Join us
and see how just a little talk with Jesus can make all the difference.
