What is Your Worldview?
In a recent interview, the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, was asked what he thinks about any issue under the sun. In response, he said “Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it. That’s my worldview."
Jen
Psaki, former White House Press Secretary, was appalled at that statement. She said, “The Bible doesn’t just inform his
worldview, it is his worldview."
She then commented “It’s not just his political ideology that should
scare us. Johnson is basically a Christian fundamentalist."
What
is a worldview? According to one
definition, it is the attitudes and values about the world around us, that form our every thought and action. What better guide to lead our every thought
and action than the Bible?
What is a fundamentalist? This is a person who “believes that what is
written in a holy book is completely true.” A
Christian fundamentalist, then, would believe that the entire Bible is the
inspired Word of God and that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who was sent into
the world to save everyone who believes in Him.
I know very little about Mr. Johnson or his political views but
if his worldview is sincerely based on Scripture, then I think he has the only
correct worldview. I also think he’s
probably been called a lot worse than Christian fundamentalist. It sounds to me like he is a man who is not
ashamed of the Gospel and is willing to stand firmly on its teachings,
regardless of the political consequences.
Other speakers
have also condemned Mr. Johnson because of his unashamed profession of his
faith, arguing that the House Chamber is not the place to appeal to God. If not, the Congress of the United States,
then where should we appeal to God? Perhaps
these speakers have forgotten that
from the days of the Continental Congress and continuing after the ratification
of the Constitution, prayer has opened various government proceedings.
As Christians, we cannot have a split
personality that acts one way in public and another way in private. Our worldview must be aligned with Scripture,
and it should be what molds us, guides us, and keeps us walking with the Holy
Spirit. It doesn’t matter whether you
are a lawyer, a mechanic, a teacher, or an electrician. If you are a Christian, you should be a
Christian lawyer, a Christian mechanic, a Christian teacher, or a Christian
electrician. God’s Word should direct
your worldview and people should be able to see by your actions that you are a
Christian fundamentalist.
As we look around our country today, we see
division, anger, unbelievable violence, and a total disregard for our laws or human
life. Perhaps a Biblical worldview, a
few more Christian Fundamentalists, and more faithful appeals to God, regardless
of our location, might begin to turn things around.
Think about this: What is your worldview? Do your actions reflect it? When was the last time you were called a
Christian Fundamentalist? If you were,
would you be ashamed or would you wear that name proudly? When was the last time you appealed to the
Sovereign God of the Universe?
If we want to change things, then I think it must
begin with us on our knees, proclaiming with Paul, “I am not ashamed of the
Gospel…”
