Today Could Be the Day!

Wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, and other natural disasters, fearful events, and great signs from heaven, perhaps like partial eclipses of the sun.  All of these were things that Jesus predicted would occur as the end of time approaches (Luke 21: 10 – 11).  Paul said that in the last days, “people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money…without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (I Timothy 3: 2 – 4).  Sounds like this morning’s news, doesn’t it?

Many people sincerely believe that the end is near.  Any day, they expect Christ to return.  I know that there are many theories of how the “end times” may play out but the only thing we can be absolutely certain of is that Christ is coming again!  How and when, no one but the Father knows (Acts 1: 7).  We do know that today could be the day!

While it’s interesting to discuss the prophecies and how they relate to current events, the reality is that for many people, today will be the day.  Approximately 150,000 people will die today.  Some will have accidents, some will succumb to long-term illnesses, some will be killed, and some will simply fade from this life, but for each one of them, today will be the Day.  There will be no more time to speculate about how or when Christ will return.  There will be no more opportunities to make a decision for Christ.  Today, their eternal destiny will be sealed, and for them, it won’t matter whether Christ returns tomorrow or 2000 years from now.

My question for you and me is:  What are we going to do about it?  Are we going to continue to debate how the end times prophecies will be fulfilled or whether the Church will or will not be raptured or will we focus on the Mission that Christ gave us?  There’s no way of knowing how many of those 150,000 that will die today will die without Christ, but I think it’s pretty safe to say that it will be a lot of them.  Will we be so busy trying to understand God’s final strategy that we lose sight of the Mission?  Do you think He has waited 2000+ years to return just to give us more time to try to figure out His ending?  I think not.  The Scripture is clear that He doesn’t want anyone to perish, but one of these days, His patience will run out.  The question is:  what will exasperate Him most?  Will it be those who refuse to accept the free gift that He offers, or will it be our failure to pursue His Mission?

Remember, today could be the day!  What are we going to do about it?
