Playing god is Never a Good Thing!
When God created man, part of our humanness was the opportunity to make choices. The Tree wasn’t put there to tempt us; it was there to show us that there were good choices and bad choices, but the ultimate choice was ours. Unfortunately, we made the wrong choice, but God knew that’s what we would do from the beginning, so He had a plan. His plan was to redeem our bad choices and set us free from the evil that had been unleashed on the world.
Now, we
are taking all the knowledge and wisdom that God has given us and are creating
artificial beings who also have the ability to make choices, both good and
bad. Like the Serpent in the Garden,
they may one day have the arrogance to think that they know more than we, their
creators, do. The problem is that we are
not God!
Unlike
God, we may not have the power or ability to suppress an uprising of robots that
we created, and we definitely don’t have the power to create a plan for saving
the human race. Playing god is never a
wise choice!
Twenty
years ago, cloning was man’s latest attempt to play god. Then, it was the attempts to “design” babies
with certain characteristics or sex.
Today, many are denying the person they were created to be and seeking
surgery to change not just their looks but their very being. And now, there is artificial intelligence!
I am
confident that God has a sense of humor, but I doubt that He is laughing today
any more than He was when the people tried to build the Tower of Babel. God made it clear then that any attempts to
supplant His power and His control over man’s destiny would not be tolerated.
As
Christians, we have a major role to play in God’s ultimate plan. That role requires us to be bold in the
advancement of the Gospel and to prepare for the day that God sends His Son to
claim His bride, the Church. In Romans
13, Paul said it was time to “wake up from your slumber” (Romans 13: 11). In John’s Revelation, Christ told the Church
at Sardis to “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have
not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God” (Revelation 3: 2
NIV84).
I think
the day is drawing nearer when Christ will return. Only God knows the day or time, but I can’t
help but think that His patience with man is growing short. It’s time for Christians to boldly proclaim
God’s message of salvation and live expecting Christ to return at any
time. We represent Christ! It’s time that we acted like it.
Romans
13: 11 - 14
