Melting in Fear
Most people remember hearing the story about the walls of
Jericho, but few probably remember the name of the woman who saved the two guys
that did the reconnaissance for that battle. Her name was Rahab. She was either a prostitute or an innkeeper and
she put her life in jeopardy by refusing to tell the King’s men where they
could find the spies. She went even
further by hiding them and sending the King’s men on a wild goose chase. She didn’t know those men. She had never seen them before. They offered her nothing before the concealment. In fact, they had invaded her house in what
we would probably call a home invasion.
The
question then is why did she do what she did.
Why risk the wrath of her own people?
The answer was very simple. She
knew what the Lord had done for the Israelites and she and her people were “melting
in fear” because they knew that the Lord had given them the land.
When was
the last time that you “melted in fear” before the Lord? When was the last time that you bowed in awe
before His throne? I must admit that I
can’t remember that time. Yes, I know that
God is sovereign. He is the Creator of
the universe and the King of Kings.
There is no being like Him! There
is no other God but Him. I know all
that.
However, I
also know that Jesus showed compassion while He walked this earth. He healed people, comforted them in their
misery, and raised them from the dead.
Then, with the ultimate act of grace and mercy, He went to the cross to
pay the price once and for all.
It’s sometimes hard to
reconcile that picture of grace with the God who causes us to melt in fear. Yet,
He is both a God of wrath and justice and a God of mercy and grace. It is time that we surrender to Him
completely, showing Him the reverence, awe, and yes, even fear that He
deserves. That fear might lead us to
step out in faith as Rahab did, risking everything because we know His
power.
We like to talk about the
second coming and the signs that the end is near. If we truly cared about those who will be
lost when Christ appears for the second time, we would melt with fear before
the throne and be urgent about the mission He has given us.
When was the last time you surrendered
your life to His will? When was the last
the last time that you stepped out in faith?
I know it's time for me to bow in reverence before the Throne of grace
and repent. It’s time that I “melted in
fear” before the Throne and recognized that He is God in heaven above and on
the earth below. May He receive the
adoration and submission that He deserves.
Joshua
2: 1 - 11
