Exercise Your Right to Vote!
One week from today, elections
will be held across the land. State
Representatives, Governors, Congressional Representatives, and Senators will be
elected. My question to you today is
what role does the Christian play in this process?
First, and
foremost, I know full well that my true citizenship is in heaven. As the old song says “this world is not my
home. I’m just a passing through.” We
are also challenged in Romans 12:2 to “not conform any longer to the pattern of
this world...” Therefore, our primary
allegiance is to God and His mission.
However, I also know that
Romans 13:1 makes it very clear that all government authorities are ordained of
God. So, what should be the role of
Christians who are also United States citizens?
The government that God
ordained for us is a representative form of government that gives us the
privilege of electing our government leaders beginning with our local councils
and Mayors and going all the way up to the highest offices in the land. In much of the world, voting is not allowed
or if it is, the government determines how you must vote. In contrast, we can vote in secrecy with our
decision being known only to us and God and anyone else we choose to share it
with. That is a privilege that should
not be taken lightly!
The year that I turned 18 was
the first year that 18-year-olds were permitted to vote. I was thrilled to be able to cast my ballot
and have continued to do that in virtually every primary and general election
since then. I consider it not only a
privilege but a God-given responsibility.
Why? Because God ordained a
government here that allows me to vote freely, I believe it is my
responsibility to uphold that right.
The only way that we will
truly turn this nation around is by changing hearts and moving people toward
Christ. However, by neglecting our right
to vote or even discouraging Christians from getting involved in government and
politics, we make it that much easier for Satan to strengthen his foothold on
this nation. Jesus said that we are the
“light of the world”. To better reflect
that light, pray for our leaders, ask God for guidance in selecting new ones,
and don’t neglect the voting privilege that God has given us.
On November 8th,
I’ll be leaving my porch to cast my ballot.
I hope you will join me.
